Threatened Species Coordinator 

• Make an impact in wildlife conservation.
• Full-time, Monday to Friday.

Moonlit Sanctuary is seeking an experienced, conservation-focused Threatened Species Coordinator to help advance Moonlit Sanctuary’s mission to save species from extinction.

Reporting to the Manager – Life Sciences, the Threatened Species Coordinator will contribute to current and future conservation programs, undertake species coordination of critically endangered Orange Bellied Parrots, assist with threatened species population management and reporting requirements, engage in evidence-based decision making, and work collaboratively with team coordinators and external partners.

This is a program coordination, population-management and reporting role. Responsibility for practical animal husbandry/care and people management belongs with team taxa Coordinators.

Key Responsibilities:

Population Management: Coordinate captive population planning and implementation in accordance with program priorities for threatened native species, maintainingrecords, developing breeding recommendations, import/export planning and arrangement, and managing studbooks, all supporting long-term conservation outcomes.
Program Coordination: Coordinate current and future threatened species programs by tracking actions, timelines, records and reporting requirements, and ensuring program activity is aligned across relevant teams.
Reporting: Produce Annual Reporting and Recommendations documentation for relevant threatened species programs and other conservation project reports for external stakeholders. The role will also be responsible for providing programs managed externally from Moonlit with required reporting information.
Collaboration with Team Coordinators: Work in partnership with team coordinatorsto translate conservation objectives into coordinated and practical program actions.
Data-Driven Improvement: Utilise population records, genetic analysis, monitoring results and program evidence to evaluate effectiveness of program actions, identify risks and opportunities, and recommend improvements to threatened species programs. The role will involve extensive use of Excel and population management software including ZIMS and PMx.
Sector Representation: Represent the interests of Moonlit Sanctuary at external forums and actively engage with the wider zoological community.

What We’re Looking For:

A strong commitment to wildlife conservation and an eagerness to build on current successes and grow with the business.
A qualified conservation professional with experience with threatened speciesmanagement, native wildlife or zoo-based conservation programs, and a strong commitment to evidence-based population management.
Tertiary or postgraduate qualifications in zoology, conservation biology, ecology, wildlife management or a related scientific field.
Strong capability in data collection, records management, reporting, data analysis and using evidence to guide conservation decisions.
Interest in conservation science and translating findings into practical species management actions.
Working knowledge of animal welfare, husbandry considerations, permits, relevant legislation and zoo-based operations sufficient to support program planning, while recognising that practical animal care sits with the keeping teams.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with team Coordinators and operational staff to support shared program outcomes.
In-depth understanding and commitment to Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) Australasia models and standards.
