We are teaming up with Western Port Biosphere Foundation on an exciting three-year project to boost the health and resilience of our iconic koalas, and you can help!
Together, we are working to create a network of ‘Koala Corridors’ within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. These corridors are safe pathways made of native habitat, allowing animals like koalas to travel safely through and between key areas of native ecosystems. This not only helps them avoid dangerous roads but also keeps their gene pools diverse and healthy.
This project builds on crucial genetic research done over the past year by the Biosphere Foundation’s Kelly Smith. Kelly’s work is vital in making sure we prioritize and plan these nature corridors effectively.
Mel Barker, the CEO of Western Port Biosphere, is thrilled about this new chapter with Moonlit Sanctuary. “They’ve already teamed up successfully to save the Orange Bellied Parrot, and now they’re aiming to do even more”, Mel says. “As science-based organizations, we’re all about turning our research into real, positive changes for biodiversity and healthy habitats. And while we have some core funding, your donations through our ‘Join the Dots for Nature’ campaign can help us build even more links.”
Moonlit Sanctuary’s Founder, Michael Johnson, adds that saving species is all about long-term vision and community support. “This isn’t just about funding – it’s about everyone getting involved. You can help by choosing the right plants and developing habitats in your own backyard. We can all be a part of these Koala Corridors, making this a truly grassroots community effort,” he says.
