Reducing waste. Maximising resources.
At Moonlit Sanctuary, we believe that caring for the environment means making the most of every resource. From reducing waste sent to landfill to finding new uses for materials and water, we continually look for ways to lessen our environmental impact while supporting the health of our wildlife and surrounding ecosystems.
One of our most significant sustainability investments is our advanced onsite wastewater treatment and reuse system. This best-in-class system treats wastewater to a high standard, allowing it to be safely reused through controlled irrigation across the Sanctuary. The recycled water supports the growth of native vegetation, including eucalyptus plantations that provide browse for our koalas, reducing our reliance on potable water while contributing to habitat restoration and animal care. By transforming wastewater into a valuable resource, Moonlit Sanctuary is demonstrating how innovative infrastructure can support both conservation and sustainable tourism.
Waste minimisation extends beyond water management. All green waste generated throughout the Sanctuary is recycled onsite, returning valuable organic material to the landscape rather than sending it to landfill. We also participate in Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme by collecting eligible bottles and cans and donating them to the local Scouts, who recycle them to raise funds for their programs. It’s a simple initiative that reduces waste while supporting local young people.
Together, these initiatives reflect our commitment to finding practical, innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint and create positive outcomes for wildlife, our community and future generations.
