BLOTCHED BLUE TONGUE

Tiliqua nigrolutea

CONSERVATION STATUS

Least Concern

Blotched blue tongues are dark brown with light coloured blotches across the back, they have a long body, large head and tail that tapers to a point. Blue tongues live in areas with lots of groundcover such as leaf litter, sheltering under logs and rocks.

WHAT THEY EAT

Blue tongues are omnivores, eating both plants and animals. They have large teeth and and strong jaw muscles, this helps them crush snail shells and insects.

BREEDING

Blue tongues are solitary animals but during breeding season, September—November, males actively pursue females. Mating may be rough, with the male’s teeth leaving scrape marks on the females, especially around the neck.
